Tips for Your First Interview in English

Going to your first job interview in English can feel exciting and a little scary—especially if English is not your first language. The good news is that with some preparation and practice, you can feel confident and make a great impression. Here are a few simple tips to help you succeed:

  1. Learn Common Interview Questions

    Practice answering questions like:

    • Tell me about yourself.

    • Why do you want this job?

    • What are your strengths?

    • Prepare short, clear answers and practice saying them out loud.

  2. Use Simple English

You don’t need big words to sound professional. Speak slowly, clearly, and use vocabulary you know well.

  3. Practice with a Friend or Tutor

Doing a mock interview can help you get comfortable speaking and build your confidence before the real one.

  4. Listen Carefully

If you don’t understand a question, it’s okay to ask:

    • “Could you please repeat that?”

    • “Can you say it another way?”

  5. Smile and Show Positivity

A friendly attitude can make a big difference, even if your English isn’t perfect.
